Data Sources:

The purpose of the Classification of Instructional Programs (CIP) is to provide a taxonomic coding scheme of instructional programs. CIP codes support the accurate tracking, assessment, and reporting of fields of study and program completions activity. CIP titles and program descriptions are intended to be generic categories, not exact duplicates of specific major field of study titles used by individual institutions.

Originally, developed by the U.S. Department of Education's National Center for Education Statistics NNCES) in 1980, the CIP 2000 edition is the third revision of the taxonomy and presents an updated taxonomy. The CIP codes are the accepted federal government statistical standard on instructional program classifications. CIP codes are used in a variety of education information surveys and databases.
